In a village nestled among northern Taiwan’s rolling hills, there lived a lonely young girl named Mei. She spent her days tending her family’s small garden and collecting water from the nearby stream. Though the villagers were kind, Mei often felt a quiet emptiness. She loved the sky, especially the clouds that drifted lazily above the hills, watching them change shapes and colors with each passing hour. Sometimes she spoke to them softly, imagining that they might hear her words.
One morning, as the mist hovered over the hills, Mei noticed a particularly bright cloud that lingered longer than the others. Its edges shimmered in soft gold and silver tones, reflecting the sun’s early light. Mei whispered a greeting, as she often did, and to her astonishment, the cloud seemed to respond. It swirled gently around her, forming a soft spiral that touched the ground. She blinked, hardly believing her eyes, and the cloud began to take a more defined shape, emerging into a figure of a kind young man.
He looked at Mei with warm eyes and spoke in a voice that sounded like the wind brushing over the hills.
I have watched you for some time, Mei. Your kindness toward all creatures and your respect for the world have called me here.

Mei was startled but unafraid. She felt a connection with this gentle being that she had never felt with any human before. Over the coming days, the cloud-man visited her frequently. He would take her hand and lift her above the fields, letting her feel the wind and see the village from a skyward view. The villagers noticed that Mei seemed happier and more confident, though they did not yet understand the nature of her new companion.
Eventually, the cloud-man revealed that he was a spirit of the sky, drawn to her because of her gentle heart. He asked Mei if she would marry him. Though surprised, Mei felt that her life had been lonely for too long and that this mysterious being truly cared for her. She agreed. On the day of their wedding, the clouds themselves gathered above the village, forming a soft canopy that shimmered with colors of dawn. The villagers were amazed but accepted that the union was blessed by unseen forces.
After their marriage, Mei and her cloud-husband continued to live in harmony with the village. He would descend in the form of a gentle mist each morning to help her with her garden and guide the villagers in caring for their crops. During times of drought, he would gather moisture from distant hills and bring it as soft rain, ensuring that the fields remained fertile. The villagers learned to respect both Mei and the sky spirits, understanding that unseen forces shaped the land and influenced their lives in ways they could not always see.
Over time, the story of Mei and her cloud-husband became a lesson in compassion and humility. The villagers realized that acts of kindness were noticed, even by the forces of nature. The children were taught to greet the clouds with respect, to speak gently to the rivers and streams, and to care for the animals of the hills. Every year, on the anniversary of Mei and the cloud’s wedding, the villagers would release small floating lanterns into the sky to honor their union and the blessings it brought.
Though the cloud-man could not remain on Earth permanently, he always returned when Mei called to him with sincerity. The girl who once felt alone discovered that her kindness had the power to connect worlds and bring harmony between humans and nature. And as long as she treated the world with love and care, the gentle transformation of unseen forces would continue to touch the lives of all around her.
